DISC MANUFACTURING - DVD Licensing

LICENSING AGENCIES

In the United States and most other countries, DVD technology and the MPEG-2 video format that it uses are protected under copyright. In order to lawfully manufacture, replicate or resell these technologies, a replicator must be licensed by all patent holders. In the case of DVD replication, there are three DVD licensing agencies that require patent royalty payments for every DVD that is replicated. CMI is a licensee of all three licensing agencies and makes royalty payments on every DVD that we replicate. If a replicator is not licensed by all three DVD consortiums, your company and your product is at risk of possible litigation for patent infringement.

It’s up to you to find out whether the replicator you choose to work with is a licensee of all three entities, not just one. Use the links below to see if your replicator is fully licensed.

*CMI is listed as Cine Magnetics Digital & Video Laboratories.
